Special Religious Education (SRE)
Our mission, as the church of Christ, is to be faithful to Jesus by obeying his Word and proclaiming His Gospel. God’s Spirit empowers us to do this, being fuelled by the hope and joy we have by knowing we have peace with God and a home in heaven that is being prepared for us.
Having been commissioned to go to the ‘ends of the earth to make disciples of all nations’, Church of the Risen King is committed to taking up all opportunities to share the good news of Jesus to our youth by supporting scripture teachers to teach the bible in NSW Public Schools.
Currently, our focus is schools in Fairfield, including, but not limited to:
- Prairiewood Public School
- Westfield Sports High
As an approved provider, and representatives of Jesus Christ, our commitment to our schools is to ensure that only suitably qualified and authorised members of our church teach SRE. Our authorised members undergo ongoing training to ensure they are familiar with NSW Public School policies and processes, equipped to deal with classroom management and teach the bible clearly and effectively.
In addition, authorised members must have:
- A Valid Working with Children’s Check
- A clear Criminal History Check
- Complete Safe Ministry training (conducted by Youth Works)
- Adhere to the Department of Education Code of Conduct Policy
- A personal faith in Jesus
- Be actively growing in their faith through regular attendance at CRKJ
- Be able to communicate the basic tenants of the Christian faith and the fundamental Christian doctrines outlined in our statement of beliefs
Approved SRE teachers:
- Display the qualities, character and aptitude to engage children and/or teenagers in lessons from the Bible, including being able to manage classroom behaviour, unsupervised if necessary
- Are familiar with Mandatory Reporting responsibilities
- Renew their registration and training every year, which includes observation, mentor support and access to qualified teachers for advice, lesson planning and self-reflection
SRE Approved Curriculum
CRKJ uses an approved curriculum based on the FEAST program designed for years 7 to 12. This curriculum is designed to introduce students to who Jesus is, including His life and teachings, and what he came to do.
We also utilise components from the Think Faith programs.
These programs, and each lesson, is reviewed every 3 years. If any further information is required, please reach out to our Elders at admin@risenking.org.au
Who to Contact
Our Elders oversees our SRE program. If you have any questions or concerns over any component of our programs, or an experience with an SRE teacher, please contact our head office on admin@risenking.org.au
CRKJ is committed to ensuring concerns and complaints relating to SRE are handled promptly, fairly and respectfully.
Complaints may be made by parents, carers, students, school staff or members of the community. Contact details for lodging a complaint are published above.
All complaints are acknowledged in a timely manner. Upon receipt, the complaint is reviewed to:
- Clarify the nature and scope of the concern
- Determine whether the matter relates to SRE teaching, conduct, curriculum or compliance
- Identify whether immediate action is required to ensure student safety or wellbeing
Where appropriate, the school principal will be informed in accordance with departmental processes, who will then manage the process alongside one of our Elders. The investigation may include:
-
Gathering relevant information from the SRE teacher, coordinator or school
-
Reviewing curriculum materials, lesson content or relevant records
-
Consulting with relevant authorities where required
A response outlining the outcome and any actions taken will be provided to the complainant within a reasonable timeframe, subject to privacy and confidentiality requirements.
Complaints involving child protection, serious misconduct or potential breaches of law are managed in accordance with legislative requirements and may be referred to:
-
The school principal
-
The Department of Education
-
The Office of the Children’s Guardian
-
Other relevant authorities
Immediate action is taken where required to protect students and contribute to the ongoing improvement of SRE delivery.
